Review of Maybelline New York Dream Liquid Mousse Foundation

Hello lovelies! Today I’m going to review Maybelline New York’s Dream Liquid Mousse Foundation. I bought this product at Walgreens one time they were having a buy-one-get-one free sale, so I go this and the Dream Mousse Blush for like $10? That’s a great deal if you ask me :)

So the reason I got this product was because I wanted to try using my MAC Studio Fix powder + Foundation over liquid foundation. I didn’t go to Walgreens looking for this but when I saw it on sale I decided to give it a try since I wanted a liquid foundation anyway. I use MAC Studio Fix in C35 and bought this Maybelline liquid foundation in Natural Beige – Medium 2.5. It looked right on the bottle so I got it. After I got home and tried it I noticed it was a wee bit dark for my skin tone so that I should have probably gotten the Medium 2.0 instead of 2.5.

It comes in a glass bottle which looks cute and all but I’m always scared it will break. I mean, it’s not like I love to drop my cosmetics but the fact that it is glass kind of scares me. The bottle comes with 1 fluid ounce of product which is actually a lot compared with how little you need to use to achieve great coverage. The top of the bottle has a nice pump that delivers enough foundation for your whole face.

When I first put it on my face the color looks really off, but as I blend it matches my skin tone beautifully with a bit of tan, I love how it blends so well and after it’s on, you can’t tell the difference. Probably around summer this will match my skin tone better. I use a full pump, but sometimes after I’m done blending I take an extra half-pump to touch up.
This foundation has a great consistency, but it’s not as mousse-like as the original Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation. This is, just as the name says, liquid foundation. I love the consistency of it though. It’s not too liquid that it’s watery, but it isn’t too creamy that it won’t spread, it’s just in between. It is super lightweight on skin and it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing foundation at all, it feels more like you just put a very light moisturizer on your face. It doesn’t look cakey even after you’ve put more than one coat; in fact it looks like you have no makeup on!

I love the coverage that this foundation gives me. It’s not a full-coverage foundation; I would actually classify it as a medium-coverage foundation. Normally I use a pore-minimizer anti-shine primer on oily areas and then a different full face primer, but this foundation is pretty good by itself to reduce the appearance of large pores and it leaves a surprisingly smooth face after application on a bare face.

As you can see in these pictures I’ve taken of my face, the first one is my face with absolutely zero makeup. I’m sorry for scaring you with my bad skin, but that’s the way it looks. Then on the second picture I’m wearing the Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse foundation only. Like I said I normally wear two different primers, but in this picture I’m wearing nothing but the foundation being reviewed so that you see what it can do by itself. If you ask me, I think it’s does a pretty kick-butt job at covering imperfections up. My large pores are nicely concealed, my blackheads can’t be seen as much and my skin tone is evened out pretty well – the redness around my nose and part of my cheeks is neutralized. So normally after I have this foundation on I use my MAC Select Moisturecover concealer under my eyes and Studio Fix Concealer for my blemishes and acne scars and then apply the Studio Fix power + foundation. However, in the third picture I am wearing no concealer at all, only the Studio Fix powder + foundation over my Dream Liquid Mousse foundation. I know that in the third the lightning is totally different so that my face looks whiter than in the first two pictures… I have no idea why, it might have something to do with the flash when I took the picture. As you can see even the wall behind me looks a lot lighter in the third picture than in the first two. Sorry about that! I hope you can see the texture of the face regardless of the sudden lightning change.

Here are some extra pictures to show the coverage. First picture is the back of my hand completely bare. As you can see I have a little birthmark there. Second picture is the back of my hand with about half a pump of Maybelline Dream Liquid Foundation just out of the pump. Then there’s the third picture where I just blended the foundation out with my finger. I wasn’t particularly trying to cover up the birthmark, but as you can see it’s barely visible after evenly distributing and blending the foundation into my skin.

Okay, so far I’ve mentioned mostly things I like about this foundation, so now I’m moving on to things I don’t like about it. I really wanted to love this foundation in every aspect of it, but I couldn’t. So the bottle claims to leave an airbrush finish. And you know what? It really does leave that airbrush finish. However, for some reason this foundation goes from airbrush finish, to dewy finish, to oily mess. I bet everyone knows this, but you have to really set this foundation with powder. It is especially important with this foundation for two reasons; first, to make it matte (or else, you’ll have an oily mess) and second, to set it (or else it will be everywhere but on your face by the end of the day). So if you set this foundation with powder it won’t go from airbrush to oil-fest within an hour, but it will be an oil-fest a couple hours later. So this is especially bad for us girls with oily skin and for those of us who live in hot weather and no matter what will normally sweat during the day.

I know I significant amount of people who hate this product because of the oily mess in can cause, but I think it is honestly worth a try, especially with you don’t have oily skin and / or if you live in a place where it’s usually cold. If you do decide to use it remember to set it with powder, or use a powder foundation over it (plus setting powder if you need to!).

Personally, I am still undecided whether I’m going to repurchase or not. I’m going to use this bottle up, but there are still some other liquid foundations I want to try. So I’ll decide if I’ll repurchase or try something else when I start to run out of this one.

Okay so that was my rather extensive review on the Maybelline New York Dream Liquid Mousse Foundation. Let me know in the comments below if you have tried this product and think of it!

Note: I bought all the products mentioned with my own money, I am not getting paid to write this entry, I’m not affiliated with the companies who makes these product and this review represents my own honest opinion.
